How do you tell your part in the biggest tale in history? I ask because it´s what I have to do. I´m Zoe Boutin Perry: A colonist stranded on a deadly pioneer world. Holy icon to a race of aliens. A player (and a pawn) in a interstellar chess match to save humanity, or to see it fall. Witness to history. Friend. Daughter. Human. Seventeen years old. ´´Everyone on Earth knows the tale I am part of. But you don´t know my tale: How I did what I did - how I did what I had to do - not just to stay alive but to keep you alive, too. All of you. I´m going to tell it to you now, the only way I know how: not straight but true, the whole thing, to try make you feel what I felt: the joy and terror and uncertainty, panic and wonder, despair and hope. Everything that happened, bringing us to Earth, and Earth out of its captivity. All through my eyes. ´´It´s a story you know. But you don´t know it all.´´ 1. Language: English. The refugees fight on.... Earth Two is a world beset by dangers, inside and out. Its genetic groupings, the cloned ´´Tanks”, the ´´Natural Borns”, and the hybrid ´´Mules” exist uneasily, each wary of the others, even as they rally to face the deadly threat of the First Imperium’s robot warriors. President Max Harmon and his inner circle have played an elaborate game of chess for 12 years, a deadly battle of wits with the genocidal alien intelligence known as the Regent. They have moved fleets, spread deceptions, built decoy planets...all to hide Earth Two’s location, to protect it from the deadly onslaught of the enemy. But sitting and waiting is a losing game. The Regent’s resources are just too powerful, its technology too advanced. It will find Earth Two eventually...and when it does, it will consign the planet to the apocalypse of antimatter devastation. Harmon knows his people must do something...and when a scouting fleet sends back word that it has found the enemy’s antimatter production site, it seems almost too good to be true. Harmon suspects it is all a trap designed to lure his fleet to its destruction. But, more than one side can lay a trap, or turn one around, and the elimination of the Regent’s antimatter production will go a long way to evening the two sides, and setting the stage for a final showdown the humans can win. 1. Katherine Neville´s groundbreaking novel The Eight dazzled audiences more than 20 years ago and set the literary stage for the epic thriller. A quest for a mystical chess service that once belonged to Charlemagne, it spans two centuries and three continents, and intertwines historic and modern plots, archaeological treasure hunts, esoteric riddles, and puzzles encrypted with clues from the ancient past. Now the electrifying global adventure continues in this long anticipated sequel, The Fire Colorado, 2003: Alexandra Solarin is summoned home to her family´s ancestral Rocky Mountain hideaway for her mother´s birthday. Thirty years ago, her parents, Cat Velis and Alexander Solarin, believed that they had scattered the pieces of the Montglane Service around the world, burying with them the secrets of the power that comes with possessing it. But Alexandra arrives to find that her mother is missing and that a series of strategically placed clues, followed swiftly by the unexpected arrival of a mysterious assortment of houseguests, indicates that something sinister is afoot. When she inadvertently discovers from her aunt, the chess grandmaster Lily Rad, that the most powerful piece of Charlemagne´s service has suddenly resurfaced and the Game has begun again, Alexandra is swept into a journey that takes her from Colorado to the Russian wilderness and at last into the heart of her own hometown: Washington, D.C. Albania, 1822: 30 years after the French Revolution, when the chess service was unearthed, all of Europe hovers on the brink of the War of Greek Independence. Ali Pasha, the most powerful ruler in the Ottoman Empire, has angered the sultan and is about to be attacked by Turkish forces. Now he sends the only person he can rely upon, his young daughter Haidee, on a dangerous mission to smuggle a valuable relic out of Albania, through the mountains and over the sea, to the hands of the one man who might be able to save it. 1. A firsthand account of the dramatic 2016 World Chess Championship between Norway´s Magnus Carlsen and Russia´s Sergey Karjakin, which mirrored the world´s geopolitical unrest and rekindled a global fascination with the sport. The first week of November 2016, as a crowd of people swarmed outside of Manhattan´s Trump Tower to rail against the election of Donald Trump, hundreds more descended on the city´s South Street Seaport. But they weren´t there to protest. They were there to watch the World Chess Championship between Norway´s Magnus Carlsen and Russia´s Sergey Karjakin-what by the time it was over would be front-page news and thought by many the greatest finish in chess history. The story lines were riveting. The championship hadn´t been hosted in New York City, the de facto world capital of the sport, in more than two decades. With both Carlsen and Karjakin just 25 years old, the tournament organizers were billing it as a battle of the millennials-the first time the championship had been waged among the generation that grew up playing chess primarily against computers. And perhaps most intriguing were all the geopolitical connections to the match. Originally from Crimea, Karjakin had recently repatriated to Russia under the direct assistance of Putin. Carlsen, meanwhile, had expressed admiration for Donald Trump, and his first move of the tournament he played with a smirk what´s called a Trompowsky Attack. Then there was the Russian leader of the World Chess Federation being barred from attending due to US sanctions, and chess fanatic and Trump adviser Peter Thiel being called on to make the honorary first move in sudden death. That the tournament required sudden death was a shock. Oddsmakers had given Carlsen, the defending champion, an 80% chance of winning. It would take everything he had to retain his title. In doing so, he would firmly make his case to be considered the greatest player chess has ever seen. Author Brin-Jonathan Butler was granted unique access to the two-and-half-week tournament and watched every move. In The Grandmaster, he aims to do for Magnus Carlsen what Norman Mailer did for Muhammed Ali in The Fight, John McPhee did for Arthur Ashe in Levels of the Game, and David Foster Wallace did for Roger Federer in his famous New York Times Magazine profile. Butler captures one of the world´s greatest sportsmen at the height of their powers, and attempts to decipher the secret to that greatness.
On a windswept Northern shore, at the very tip of what will one day become Scotland, the islanders believe the worst they have to fear is a Viking attack. Then the burning comes. They cannot run from it. Water will not stop it. It consumes everything - yet the burned still speak. The Doctor is looking for a game on the famous Lewis chess set. Instead, he encounters a people under attack from a power they cannot possibly understand. They have no weapons, no strategy, and no protection against a fire sent to engulf them. Add in some marauding Vikings with very bad timing, a kidnapped princess with a secret of her own and a TARDIS that seems to have developed an inexplicable fear of water, and they all have a battle on their hands. The islanders must take on a ruthless alien force in a world without technology, without communications, without tea that isn´t made out of bark. Still, at least they have the Doctor on their side - don´t they? 1. Language: English. Narrator: Neve McIntosh. Audio sample: http://samples.audible.de/bk/bbcw/005985/bk_bbcw_005985_sample.mp3.
