(Chess) 12 tracks. This has been digitally remastered from the original Chess Records master tapes. This slim but potent mix of vintage harmony vocal sides spotlights Chess´ roll in a market that was often dominated by the Atlantic and Mercury labels. Cut before and during Chess´ run of electric blues hits, the mix here takes on such legends as the Moonglows (´´In My Diary´´), the pre-fame Flamingos (´´Dream of a Lifetime´´), and the post-fame Ravens (´´Give Me (A Simple Prayer)´´). Also on hand, a young Four Tops poised for Motown gold, the Students, and the Chess brothers´ first signing, the Dozier Boys.

(2017/Sundazed) 12 tracks, gelbes Vinyl Badger State Garage / Psych Weirdness! The lone album by Milwaukee’s Baroques was recorded in 1967 and issued on Chess Records as part of the label’s effort to market music to a new audience. It’s a beautifully-grungy affair; somewhat lo-fi, featuring many incredible originals, such as ´´Mary Jane,” issued as the lead-off single - and promptly banned by radio for it’s supposed drug references… Filled with moody vocals atop clattering and chiming guitar work, this rarity is now available from Sundazed, in marvelous mono. The Baroques’ one and only long-player seemingly came out of nowhere in 1967. The first non-R&B act signed to the famed Chess Records, the Milwaukee based Baroques mixed garage intensity with sonic experimentation that would come to define the later part of the decade. Though widely overlooked, their debut album was rumored to outsell Sgt. Pepper’s on a local level. Fronted by the dark baritone vocals of Jay Berkenhagen, the Baroques weave through the structures of early 60s rock, adding a subtly gloomy touch and at times departing into chaotic bursts of noise. Almost as quickly as they appeared, the Baroques quickly dissolved, but not before making their unique statement with an eclectic array of eccentric tracks. Sundazed is proud to present this delightfully strange documentation of early Midwestern psych! Hypnotizing and atmospheric, filled with jangling riffs and dark textures. Reissued here in marvelous mono and celebrated with a pristine R.T.I. pressing on electric tapioca yellow vinyl!

(See For Miles/1996) 19 tracks DANCE WITH DADDY ´G´ It may have been a long time coming, but Daddy G is finally being presented on his first album. Daddy G. whose name is Gene Barge, can be remembered for his fine saxophone performances with well-known artists such as the late Chuck Willis, the Griffin Brothers and Gary (-U.S.´´) Bonds. His fine solo on Chuck Willis´ recording of ´´C. C. Rider- was a big factor in making that record the hit that it was. Considered by many as the greatest of the ´sour saxophonists, Gene provokes that ´´makes you wanna dance, dance´´ feeling with his unusual soulful style. This album, a discotheque, presents the hits of many fine artists whose records are currently riding high on the charts. People young and old are dancing to the infectious beat of these tunes and with this album they can dance and dance to a compact musical extravaganza played as only Daddy G can play it. The treatment that Gene gives to the tunes is inspired and inspiring. Most of the arrangements were written by him and the problem of making instrumentals as melodic as the original vocal records was solved in fine style. A good example is the solid beat and happy feeling brought forth in the Beatles´ hit, -1 Feel Fine´´. You will recognize virtually all of the songs immediately although they were great vocal hits. Heretofore, Daddy G has recorded mostly his own material; however, on this LP he demonstrates his versatility by doing the material of others. Gene said, -Just playing these songs expertly was not my ob-jective. I mostly wanted to get a good groove and a good sound´´. Gene was born and raised in Norfolk, Va., where he began his music career. In Norfolk he had a great deal of success as a composer, in-strumentalist and producer on another label. Prior to those years, Gene was with Chess Records. You may remember his recording of ´´Country-. Now he´s back home again with Chess and we predict many hits for him. Raymond Hutchins

(2015/Sundazed) 12 tracks. Delivering a devastating punch to rock’s early ‘60s doldrums, Bo Diddley Is a Lover bursts at the seams with Bo’s uncompromising, rockin’ beat. Yep. Industry and the government may have cleaned up fellow ’50s rockers like Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Elvis and Gene Vincent, but they didn’t get to Bo -- a defiant rocker to the core. By the time of the 1961 sessions for this album, Bo had relocated from Chicago to DC, to record at his own home studio. He used his artistic freedom to his complete advantage, churning out a series of killer records unfettered by bureaucratic interference. Considered the pinnacle of his collaboration with Lady Bo (aka, Peggy Jones), Is a Lover is also one of Bo’s most diverse. Along with rockers like ´´Hong Kong, Mississippi” and ´´Bo Diddley Is Loose,” the LP also features fantastic instrumentals such as ´´Congo,” straight blues (´´Bo’s Blues,” that is), a call-and-answer with old sparring partner Jerome Green (´´Bo’s Vacation”) and the fabulous ballad, ´´Love Is a Secret,” with backing vocals from a young DC girl group, the Impalas (who would hit the charts three years later as the Jewels). On this album, they’re also in fine form on the rocking ´´Not Guilty” and the title track. And they’re not the only gals contributing, as Lady Bo shines on the axe throughout — particularly on the exotic instro, ´´Aztec.” Not to be outdone, Bo closes the album with the badass instro, ´´Quick Draw” — with strings pulled and twisted to their limit. This 180-gram edition, properly mastered from the original Chess mono reels, is where you need to be on this album. For sure, for sure.
